The story begins in 1987, in the village of Pathri Aali in Jammu and Kashmir. The community of Pastoralists Gujjars, albeit their poverty and differences, dwell happily. But that happiness did not last for long. Soon their safe dwellings became the militants’ lair. The smiles transformed to tears. But what kept the people going was the love for their home and the will to take back what was once theirs.

The story is gritting and revolves around what follows in the aftermath of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir. The tale captures tragedy, fatality, loss while also maintaining love and honor.

Spanned over a period of sixteen years, the book takes the reader on a journey from love to loss to lost love. The book captures moments that make the reader believe that they are in the story. It’s a very strong and bold narrative.

The author of the book, Ayaz Kohli, hails from Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. He is a Civil Servant, presently working as Joint Commissioner GST . Snakes in the Meadows is his debut novel.
